  amazing we were the last table in so were sat next to the kitchen and thoughout the night people were thanking the chef as they left !! our food was spot on from start to finnish and we left very full and satisfied ! i would definatly reccomend this place ...

  I'm a Bideford girl originally and all my family still live there, so while visiting my parents over the Easter break, my husband and I ventured out with high hopes for the kind of food we are used to having when we dine out in Nottingham, where we live.
  Having read some of the rave reviews here I am wondering whether the chef was on a night off when we dined at Lathwell's.
  For starter, I ordered 'Field Mushrooms' from the menu, and was served with just one small mushroom. My husband had the scallops, which were overcooked and rubbery. Moving onto the main course, the cabbage rolls containing the other vegetables were tough and discoloured and my fish pie was burned on top and slopped onto the plate - I had expected an individual pie in a dish. It was bland and uninteresting. My husband's beef roulade was so overcooked that it was dry and fell apart when he looked at it. As for dessert, there was only one portion of this and one portion of that left, so we were limited. I have to say though that the desserts were the best food of the evening - maybe because they were made by the proprietor's sister and not the chef! The bill, with wine, came to over £64, which we found steep in comparison to the poor standard. The staff were welcoming enough but this did not make up for the lack of finesse in the food, which I could have done better myself at home. Finally, a party of six on the table next to us complained that there had not been enough vegetables to go around with their main course - the waitress simply said that they had been very busy and had not prepared enough for the evening. Mmm. I rest my case.
